Jaali House

A residence in Mayiladuthurai built around the brick jali - the perforated wall that has cooled south Indian houses for centuries.

The main facades step in and out behind a screen of jali, casting a shifting pattern of light onto the floor through the day. Inside, a double-height living space draws air up through the section, with the jali walls sized to balance privacy with cross-ventilation.
